Inscribed by Gordon to artist Carolee Schneeman, and dated in the month of publication. "For Carolee, a madame too beautiful on her horse if there ever was one. With love from Jaimy, 4 Oct 99." Leaning, with light soiling to the white wrappers of this paperback original. Carolee Schneeman is a pioneer of feminist performance art. Her challenges to taboo and tradition can be seen as inspiring and influencing artists as varied as Paul McCarthy, Valie Export, the Guerrilla Girls, Tracy Emin and Karen Finley. Her self-shot film Fuses (1964-1967) remains a controversial classic, and is considered to be the first feminist erotic film. Schneeman's later performance Interior Scroll (1975), in which she unrolled a text from her vagina and described the sexism and disdain women artists encounter in their careers from male colleagues and art critics, helped pioneer some of the ideas later popularized in The Vagina Monologues. The first performance of Gordon's The Rose of the West starred Schneeman, and was staged at Rosmarie and Keith Waldrop's Wastepaper Theater in Providence, R.I.
