A gift inscription from 1958 on the free endpaper. Corners bumped. Nicks and chipping to the price-clipped dust jacket. Tales of hunting mountain lion and elk in the Sangre de Cristo range of northern New Mexico. Uncommon in the first edition, reissued in 1975. Map endpapers, illustrated. The author was New Mexico's first Game Warden, and in 1950 rescued a singed and frightened bear cub after a forest fire. The cub became Smokey Bear, the iconic symbol for forest fire prevention.
